Nature and Adventure in Azerbaijan
The Gizil Aghaj marshes and the Hirkan National Park are two
magnificent nature reserves to visit. Adventure in the desert in Azerbaijan.
Nature and Adventure in Hirkan National Park
Bordered by the Caspian Sea and the lush Talysh Mountains,
Lankaran is ideally placed between two of Azerbaijan's best nature reserves.
The marshes of the Gizil Aghaj reserve on the Caspian coast, just north of the
town of Lankaran, are famous for hosting a multitude of waterfowl, including
the flamingo which migrates here from Africa every winter. Meanwhile, the vast
Hirkan National Park extends into the Lankaran and Astara regions. It is a
botanist's paradise home to a wide variety of trees, including ancient iron
trees that survived the last ice age as well as the highly endangered Caucasian
leopard. Over a dozen marked routes offer great hiking opportunities, some with
lunch breaks and tea breaks along the way in timeless local villages.
